Web design theory calls for a website to appear seamless to every user. The problem, of course, is that every user’s different.
Tackling website dimensions has been a rather simple decision. You can decide to design a static template and then choose one of the typical dimensions: 640 x 480, 800 x 600 or 1024 x 768.
Or, if you feel crazy enough, you can decide to design a fluid design that wraps those typical dimensions and somehow looks good with the right “divs” in fluid motion. Sounds simple, but a little limited. With the break of “usability” and “total user experience”, we have to now consider a morphing website. Welcome CSS and javascript!
Web content mogul MSN.com has done something which seems to be catching trends. They have designed their homepage at a standard of 770px with a fluid height…. but wait! Look into their “Page Options” and you’ll see something very cool, “Switch to Wide.” This is a wide 980px design that was meant to be this way!
